In rural Bangladesh, Hamida Begum’s days began before dawn. A widow with three young children and no stable income, she would walk miles each day to clean other people’s homes — returning late, exhausted, and still unable to feed her family properly or secure a roof over their heads.
There was no rest. No safety. No future in sight.
But where the world saw another invisible woman trapped in poverty, the Momtaj Foundation Freedom Fund saw potential.
Rebuilding a Life, Brick by Brick
Hamida’s turning point came when the Freedom Fund team stepped in. They discovered she qualified for government housing support — a program she didn’t even know existed. The Foundation not only helped her apply but also co-funded the construction of a safe, permanent 3-bedroom home.
For the first time, Hamida and her children had a place to call their own — a space of security, shelter, and peace.
Empowerment Beyond Shelter
But real change demands more than four walls.
Hamida enrolled in the Foundation’s women’s empowerment programme, where she was trained in tailoring and home economics. Upon graduation, she received her own sewing machine and was placed with a respected garment manufacturer.
Today, she earns up to 10,000 BDT a month, supports her family independently, and holds her head high. Her children are in school. Her home is filled with hope.
“For the first time, I feel secure,” says Hamida. “I now have a home, a skill, and a way to provide for my children.”
